Horrible news coming out of the Bruins organization today that veteran David Backes will be undergoing significant colon surgery. Here’s what we know.
David Backes will be having a portion of his colon removed. I can’t really speak to what that is like, but it has to SUCK. Backes had returned to the Bruins lineup ahead of schedule this season. The reason Backes had been held out of the lineup to start the season because of the episodes he was having from his diagnosed diverticulitis.
That’s a real thing that I had never heard before in my life. So to educate all of us I went over to the fine people of WebMD and apparently diverticulitis is an inflammation or infection in one or more small pouches in the digestive tract.
Well, that certainly sounds like it sucks and apparently, for Backes, it’s become even worse since he’s returned to the lineup. From everything I have read, this surgery is significant but there’s nothing life-threatening on the table and Backes will be fine after he recovers. That is a very positive sign.
So here we are, Backes down for 8 weeks and this Bruins season continues to drive hockey fans up the wall. I know it’s early and we can’t really make a determination on this team yet but nothing has been consistent about this team so far… Rask is awful, then he’s great, but then he’s hurt. Khudobin is lights out, but he’s the backup, then gets hurt. The young kids are electric, but then they’re stupid, but they are fine, but sometimes just oh so stupid.
It’s just been a very odd start to a hockey season and without a veteran like David Backes, who has always been known for leading a locker room, it creates a few more challenges. I don’t worry about the locker room that much knowing that Chara and Bergeron are still in uniform… but Backes helps and he won’t be around for a while.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids….. just got younger.
