Last night was one of those great Boston sports nights. The Bruins and the Celtics were both in action. There’s always been a strong debate that you are either a hockey person or a basketball person and there really isn’t a hybrid. I hear it on talk radio all the time and I laugh at it… every time.
Last night was awesome except when 50% of it ended up NOT BEING AWESOME AT ALL. Let’s at least get to what led to me wondering if I was going insane. The Bruins started strong. Charlie McAvoy is the real deal and the pass he sent to Brad Marchand to open up the scoring was aces.
Great start, Bruins looked solid and the Kings are actually really good. ALL POSITIVE SIGNS. HOCKEY IS FUN! Just don’t make any mental mistakes and this lead can build and we can wi….
GOD DAMMIT WHAT THE HELL… I watched this one live and once I saw Krug turn the puck over I just knew it was going to find the back of the net. These are the kinds of mistakes that just can’t happen against good teams.
The rest of the game was gridlock. The game goes into overtime. The beautiful 3-on-3 overtime. I’ve never done cocaine, but I have to imagine that 3-on-3 overtime hockey is the sporting equivalent to it. Even that kind of ice couldn’t decide this one… I thought.
It’s hard switching back and forth constantly when both Boston teams are playing. You make decisions based on what you know is going to happen next because it’s all but certain. Kyrie gets fouled in the act of shooting? Two free throws are coming, switch to the Bruins to check in. OR OR OR OR OR OR OR
THE BRUINS ICE THE PUCK WITH .9 SECONDS LEFT IN OVER TIME SO YOU SWITCH TO THE CELTICS BECAUSE THE BRUINS ARE GOING INTO A SHOOTOUT THAT IS CERTAIN.
LOL. That happened. That actually happened. That play happens once out of every 10 million times. I turned back to expect a shootout and I see the Bruins postgame crew looking like they were about to be hit by the Red Line. I refresh Twitter and there it is. Hell on ice.
This is a shitty beat, and there’s not much to take away when something like that happens. I really really liked the way Tuukka Rask played in net last night. He was strong and stood on his head most of the night. 26 saves on 28 shots. I’ve been giving Rask a ton of crap as of late and he showed up.
Luckily, it’s just one. Bruce Cassidy just needs to tell Torey Krug to quit it with turnovers like that and everybody move on.
PS – If that was NHL 18 and that happened to me, my controller is going right through my TV. Guaranteed.
