You want the billion-dollar question/topic/media story of the NBA season so far? It’s not the Celtics and their win streak just so we’re clear.
It’s about the Cleveland Cavaliers… What else is new? The most talked about team in basketball. Nothing has changed. It’s the same narrative as year’s before “What the hell is wrong with the Cavs?” and “Are the Cavaliers screwed?” followed by the major media answering these questions with “THE CAVS ARE DEAD”
I will admit, not everyone has said it. But I have seen it A LOT lately. A lot of people saying that LeBron has checked out and is packing his bags, Dwyane Wade threw off the chemistry of the team. The bench players hate the starters. Blah blah blah blah. I’ve heard ridiculous things that that Cavs won’t make the Eastern Conference Finals and that they’re dead in the water.
As a Celtics fan… This is so much fun. I love seeing the Cavaliers struggle, I do not like that basketball organization and that’s part of being a fan of the Celtics. On Twitter I see all these hot-heads screaming “BELIEVELAND!” at me and that Boston sports fans have such a complex and obsession with the Cavs losing…. Well, yeah. Idiots, we do. That’s what we do.
We are nothing if not consistent in how we view teams we don’t like. This is no different.
Still, we have seen this story over and over every single season. This time it’s just coming very very early. There is always a point of every Cleveland season where people think they’re going to implode or that they “Just don’t have it anymore.” Every season it happens I fall into the trap of thinking Cleveland is vulnerable with respects to the Eastern Conference.
I just have to wait on believing it this time. You should too.
The Cavaliers do not have a talent problem, they have a cohesion problem. They are 28th in the league in points allowed. They literally play ZERO defense right now and that’s something that’s fixable.
LeBron James is still showing about as many signs of slowing down as I show signs of getting my life together. NONE. He’s still playing out of his mind, and as much as I can’t stand that… I have to acknowledge it for what it is.
I always look at the Cavaliers with respect to the Celtics and the playoffs. I don’t think it’s the right time to be able to make that kind of call on the Cavs. I’m trying to look at this as objectively as possible.
Now don’t get me wrong… While they are struggling and the Celtics keep winning games I am over the freaking moon kind of happy. I just don’t think we can read too much into the Cavs struggles this early in the season and expect them to fold. If/WHEN the Celtics meet them in the playoffs it’s still a 7 game bar fight that the Celtics will be considered underdogs in. They’ll be up for the challenge, but I urge us all to not get all wrapped up in thinking the Cavs are completely cooked… Until LeBron leaves them again this time for Los Angeles.
I can understand why people would call bullshit on me saying “Well, how can you NOT read into the Cavs struggles because it’s early and then hype up the Celtics win streak so much when it’s the same time frame of early?”
Easy. The Celtics lost one of their top pieces, and are playing the best defense in basketball. They’re beating quality opponents and that’s stuff that is easy to get behind. Win streaks fresh off a gigantic loss like Hayward are a thing that speaks volume to the character of a team. That is easy to latch on. The Cavaliers response to this media criticism and their garbage play on the court will be the same judgment on their character as a basketball team.
