This week the Patriots head to the Mile High City to face-off against the Denver Broncos.
Is anyone dripping with confidence here? This game is going to be closer than a lot of people are suggesting. I am well aware that the Broncos offense is a nightmare, but playing in Denver has not been kind to the Patriots in the past. Did you know the Denver Broncos are the ONLY team Tom Brady does not have a winning record against? He is 7-9 against them in his career (including the postseason) and he is a hideous 3-7 when playing in Denver.
“Yeah but Sean, Bill had two weeks to prepare for the Broncos, we are going to demolish them!” That’s what I thought too, then I looked at the numbers. Since 2010, the Patriots are 4-3 in games after their bye week. If you asked me that yesterday, I would have bet the house (that I don’t own yet) that they were 7-0 when given two weeks to prepare for a team.
Let’s take Denver a little more seriously as we dive into the keys to the game:
Patriots Offensive Line vs Broncos Defensive Line
This is where the game will be won or lost. Brady hasn’t exactly been treated like the royalty he is by this group. At 40 years young, Tom has taken too many hits that make me wonder if he is going to get back up. Now while we make fun of the Broncos deplorable offense, nobody is bad mouthing the defense. It is LEGIT SCARY, especially the defensive line. If our O-Line can protect Brady for more than two seconds so he can get the ball out of his hands we should be ok, but Von Miller is going to be trying to do this all night.
Our starting right tackle Marcus Cannon also hasn’t practiced all week so now I’m even more terrified. Belichick is going to have his hands full trying to figure out how to stop Denver’s pass rush. Look for a sneaky big game from James White because I think Tom is going to have to check down to the running backs more than he wants to.
The Broncos defense even after allowing 51 pts to the Philadelphia Eagles last week are still the 2nd best overall defense in the league. They are 5th in rush defense at 88.4 yards allowed per game, 4th in pass defense at 192.4 yards allowed per game, and yet they are 24th! in points allowed. What does that tell you? Their offense has put them in TERRIBLE spots time after time this season. So what do you think a big key will be?
CAN THE PATRIOTS D PRESSURE THE QUARTERBACK ONE TIME AND STOP A NOSEBLEED!
This game is going to show us where we are with the Patriots defense. I will admit, they have been playing a lot better. However, they need to not come out and not get embarrassed by this putrid Denver offense. It doesn’t matter if it is Brock Osweiler or Trevor Siemean at QB, they need to make sure they don’t have a game like they did against the Jets. If we get down early and the crowd is into the game, Mile High becomes an impossible place to come back in. THE DEFENSE CAN NOT LET THIS HAPPEN.
Also, have you looked at the upcoming schedule for this team? It’s atrocious. 5 of the next 6 games are on the road and next week they play Oakland in Mexico City. ( I hate you, Goodell). Including this week’s matchup we are
@ Oakland (Mexico City)
Home vs Miami
@ Miami (Monday Night)
That’s ROUGH. So it is very important that this defense comes out firing on all cylinders Sunday night in Denver. These guys are going to need the momentum and confidence boost to get through this extremely tough stretch of their schedule.
I truly think the Patriots will end up winning this game. After reading this you probably are a little more wary of Sunday night’s matchup and that’s what the point of this preview was meant to do. When we go in there and blow them out you can come and attack me, but I think this game is going to come down to the wire.
Patriots 24 Broncos 21
For my fellow degenerates out there the Pats are -8.5 and the O/U is 45
I’m not touching this game with a ten-foot pole.
P.S Bill listened to me and signed MARTY! LET’S GO!
Hope you all have a great weekend, and GO PATS!
