Welcome to the worst week of the Patriots season, folks! The BYE week. As a fan, I hate the BYE week because I’m selfish and I want to watch the Patriots play every single week. That’s how I’m wired and it’s not going to change.
However, I do understand that it’s a blessing the Patriots have made it to the BYE week with a 6-2 record. This team looks like they could all be patients of Doctor House (Remember House? Top notch TV). Chris Hogan has been a human piñata going across the middle. The O-Line is banged up. I still believe there’s something injury-related behind Nate Solder’s inconsistent play this season. Finally, whether you choose to read into it or not… Tom Brady is banged up.
With all of those things being true, it’s nice to know the Patriots are off this week resting before they go into Denver next Sunday night.
So here we are knowing the Patriots are off this week and also knowing that we will be spending all of Sunday still watching football… How should we make sense of this week? What should we look for? Is there anything to keep an eye on? Insert the fourth question here…?
I’ve got you covered. Here are the things to do to make the Patriots BYE week as productive as possible.
- RED ZONE – RED ZONE – RED ZONE
If you do not have NFL Red Zone… I do not trust you. Plain and simple. You ever see that South Park episode about World of Warcraft? This scene comes to mind.
That is what you should all tell people if they do not have Red Zone. Just park your TV on that channel and enjoy. You won’t miss a thing. Although this channel should dominate your Sunday… There are a few more things you should keep an eye out for.
2. The Kansas City Chiefs
This is a big matchup for the Chiefs who are currently the number two seed in the AFC behind Pittsburgh and ahead of the Patriots. The Chiefs play the Cowboys and YES ZEKE IS PLAYING. As much as it might be painful for you to do… Root for the Cowboys on Sunday. You want Zeke to run for 8 million yards and 62 touchdowns en route to gigantic victory. Any help the Patriots can get to make up ground in the race for home-field advantage in the playoffs helps.
3. FIND OUT WHICH GAME IAN EAGLE AND DAN FOUTS ARE COMMENTATING… THEN CHANGE THE CHANNEL FOREVER OR JUST MUTE THEM.
This could be the most important thing you do on Sunday. They are the worst. Seriously I would rather listen to Jim Nantz talk about how awesome Peyton Manning is for 4 straight hours than listen to Ian Eagle and Dan Fouts. Don’t tell me I’m being irrational.
4. Potential AFC Wild Cards
The bottom half of the AFC Playoff picture is really tight. I know that there is a lot of football to be played the rest of this season but this is a good time to really scope out other AFC teams and see what makes them go and how they stack up. It’s one thing when you’re seeing the highlights but if you get a chance to watch a team like the Jaguars play for a long stretch of time it’s interesting what you can learn about a team.
There you have it. Four solid things you can do to ensure that you have a productive Patriots BYE week. Then we’re on to Denver.
